Barcelona vs. Cordoba Preview 20-12-2014 La Liga
Barcelona couldn’t manage to find a goal against Getafe in their last liga game. Their clumsiness in the final third is indicated by the fact that they managed to get only two shots on target despite of a total of 23 shots taken by Barca throughout the course of the game.

Cordoba on the other hand have managed to snatch a point in their last liga game against Levante in what proved to be a goalless stalemate. Cordoba achieved their only liga win in their away game at Bilbao a fortnight ago. Ghilas gave Cordoba the lead in the 23rd minute. Despite the continuous pressure and majority of possession (68%) by the Bilbao side coupled with a total of 15 shots on target, Bilbao couldn’t break the resistance of Cordoba. Cordoba held on to the one goal lead firmly and finished the game with three points in their pockets. Cordoba have displayed some excellent defending in their last two liga games by earning two consecutive clean sheets. This can prove an early warning to a Barca side which struggled immensely against Getafe to get the ball at the back of the net.

The fixture’s head-to-head statistic mentions that Barcelona have the upper hand as the only two meetings in this century between these two sides ended up with Barcelona as victors. The last time these two met in the Camp Nou, the home side tormented the visitors 5 goals to 0. When Cordoba were at home, they lost 0-2 to Barca. ( both the games in the Copa Del Rey)

Despite the liga upset, Barca come into this fixture inspired by a 8-1 victory over Huesca in the Copa Del Rey. Pedro who managed a hattrick in the Copa game will be likely to start against Cordoba. Also Suarez who is still in pursuit of his first liga goal will lead the line in this important fixture.

Cordoba will probably look to find a single opportunistic goal against the lethal home side and the striker Ghilas can be singled out as the biggest threat in this Cordoba team.

Barcelona will have to win this game if they are to keep their title race hopes alive as their fellow contenders Real Madrid who see themselves comfortably perched at the top of the table 4 points ahead of Barca and are currently in Morocco enjoying the club world cup. Luis Enrique said in the post match interview after drawing with Getafe,

“There’s a long way to go. We had a four-point lead before and now it’s the other way round. We have to accept things and try to improve.”

The Barca gaffer surely realizes the importance of this weekend’s game. The manager also stated in the press conference that he considers that his team were unlucky in their game against Getafe despite their efforts to get a goal.

A win for the visitors will be nothing less than a historic feat as their last win against Barca came in May 1972. It would also bring Cordoba out of the relegation zone.

The season stats among these two sides also suggest that Barcelona will have the upper hand in this game–last match of the year 2014. But at the end of everything, this game is soccer…..it is not a game of stats and records.
